The Best of Dartmoor
On the edge of Dartmoor National Park, The Old Dairy has been tastefully decorated in a modern rustic style, by the owners, Barrie and Mark, who live in the adjacent Mill Barn, part of a small hamlet of converted agricultural and mill buildings. French windows look directly onto the River Teign and the Dunsford Stepping Stones: a public right of way leading to numerous footpaths winding through the medieval Bridford Wood and beyond. The pretty village of Dunsford is a gentle 10-minute walk across the fields with its small village shop and post office, tearoom, pub and church.
Local wildlife is abundant and includes kingfishers, dippers, buzzards, owls, bats, otters, deer and numerous woodland birds. The famous Steps Bridge beauty spot and Devon Wildlife Trust’s Dunsford Wood is just a few minutes walk away. The picturesque moorland town of Moretonhampstead is about 5 miles away with a small range of shops, pubs and cafes and the moors and tors beyond. Eight miles in the opposite direction is the ancient city of Exeter with its shops, restaurants and bars, university and splendid Gothic cathedral.
Accommodation is for two people and includes a king-size bed, a modern shower room, fully equipped kitchen/dining area and a lounge area with a TV/Blu-ray and a cosy log burner. There is a designated parking space on site.
Barrie and Mark would aim to greet you, depending on your time of arrival, with complimentary afternoon tea and homemade cakes or if later, something stronger!
On arrival, the kitchen will be stocked with basics such as washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, tea, coffee, sugar, milk, olive oil etc. You are welcome to help yourself to fresh herbs from the garden. Barrie and Mark will provide a selection of groceries including homemade bread, homemade jam or marmalade, eggs and butter which should provide you with breakfast on your first morning. On arrival, you will also find a bottle of white wine chilled in the fridge (please let us know if you’d prefer red!). Hand and body wash, towels and bed-linen are also supplied.
You are welcome to share Barrie and Mark’s small garden and seating areas, where you can relax with a glass of wine or a good book. You may prefer to take a camera or a sketch book over the stepping stones and meander through the woods or along the riverside.
